Bringing the joys of preserving to the next generation
As you may know, a while ago The Guild were invited to run a jam making demonstration as part of the 'Food for Life' initiative a St Katherine's School in Pill, Bristol. It was a challenge as it was our first such event but we were pleased that the children were keen to engage and enjoyed it. The teacher that had invited us was very grateful for our participation and requested that we return in the future to take part again.
On reviewing the day we felt that here was an opportunity to educate children and young people in the joys of jam and preserve making in other schools across the UK. Using the expertise of our members, The Guild is well placed to explore the interest amongst schools by engaging with this opportunity as part of the growing importance of educating children about sustainable living.
To cut a long story short, we have sought permission from The Department for Education on how best to initiate this project. They were happy to hear that we are interested in adding to the educational experience of children and asked that we contact individual schools directly to advise them of our interest in rolling this out.
We ran a small pilot scheme and have repeated our initial offering several times in the last few months. To tackle the bigger picture we are going to need your help - would you be willing to help The Guild by passing on your skills and experience in jam and preserve making by heading up a demonstration in your area? If so please complete your details in the contact form and we will take you through the next steps.
There is no payment for the demonstration but all of your out-of-pocket expenses will be met by The Guild. A demonstration kit will be sent to you prior to the event containing essential equipment but you will need to purchase ingredients with the cost reimbursed via your expenses. The kit will be collected from you after the event. What you make, and the recipe used, can be your choice - if you need help with producing printed items to hand out at the demonstration please ask.
We hope you decide to join in!
